What does the data you collect suggest to you about the literacy practices of that community?
I decided to interview two people who were younger than me. I interviewed my cousin who is a senior in high school. I was interested in seeing where she was thinking about going to college and why. I wanted to look at what she thought about going away to school or staying home. I found in her interview that she spends her time going to school, participating in sports, spending time with family and friends, and reading. This shows that she is very well rounded and seems to manage her time well. This shows that she has the ability to manage her time and understand where she has to be and when. These are very useful characteristics that will be important when she transitions to college. The literacy practices of this community seem to be up to standards in the idea that she is able to critically think about situations. She also spends a good amount of time reading and interacting with peers. I also interviewed my brother who is in 5th grade. I wanted to see how his schedule differed from my cousins. These two people are pre-college students. One is closer to going to college than the other but their daily schedules seemed to be very similar. My brother spends most of his time in school, doing school work, and playing hockey. These are similar to the activities that my cousin does. It seems funny to think a person who is 17 would be doing things that are very close to the things that a person who is 10 is doing. However I think that by looking at this data we can conclude that college is a major step in someones life. The day of a college student is a lot different than the day of someone who is still in school.
